Why some HEIC or HEIF files cannot be converted
A failed conversion is frustrating, but it does not always mean a file is corrupt. HEIF is a container with multiple possible image encodings and features, and a converter may support only a subset.
Similar extensions can hide important differences
“HEIC” is commonly used for HEVC-encoded HEIF still images from iPhones. HEIF itself is broader. A file may include a different encoding, multiple images, or features that an application does not decode. Standard iPhone camera stills are a common supported case, but compatibility is not universal.
Apple’s HEIF technical overview illustrates why this format family can carry more than a conventional single image. That flexibility is valuable, but it makes a filename extension an incomplete compatibility test.
Malformed and incomplete files are another possibility
A download can be cut short, a transfer can fail, or a file can be mislabeled. In those cases, there may not be enough valid image data to decode. But do not label every unsupported file “corrupt”: an intact file may simply use an unsupported HEIF variant.
What to do next
Try opening the original on the device that created it, or ask the sender to export a JPEG. If it was transferred through an app, obtain the original again rather than a preview or renamed attachment. How this converter handles a failure
