Why iPhones save photos as HEIC
iPhones use HEIC as part of Apple’s High Efficiency approach because it can reduce storage use while retaining a high-quality image.
High Efficiency is designed for modern media
Apple’s High Efficiency formats use HEIF for photos and HEVC for video. In ordinary use, this can mean more photos fit in the same storage space than with older formats. The format can also represent capabilities that a simple JPEG does not, including related image data around a still capture.
Apple explains the user-facing choice in its camera format guidance: High Efficiency captures use HEIF/HEVC, while Most Compatible captures use JPEG/H.264. That setting affects photos you take after changing it; it does not retroactively change existing photos.
Why a smaller file is not the whole story
HEIC’s benefit is not just storage. The HEIF container can carry richer image structures, though an individual app may only use part of that information. This flexibility also explains why “HEIC support” is not identical everywhere. A normal iPhone still photo is a common case, while another HEIF variant can need different decoding support.
Should you switch to Most Compatible?
Most Compatible may be useful when you routinely move fresh photos into older software or upload to systems that do not accept HEIC. The trade-off is that future JPEG captures can use more storage. If compatibility problems are occasional, keeping High Efficiency and converting only the copies you need is often more practical.

When conversion is not enough
A JPEG is a standard still image, not a full replacement for every HEIF feature. This converter does not preserve metadata, HDR, depth information, or Live Photo auxiliary data. Keep the original HEIC if you may need those features later.
