Does converting HEIC to JPEG reduce image quality?

A HEIC-to-JPEG conversion creates a lossy JPEG copy. That can change image data, but the practical effect depends on the original photo, the conversion, and how the JPEG will be used.

JPEG uses lossy compression

Lossy compression reduces data to make files smaller. It does not mean every converted photo will look visibly worse on screen, but it does mean the JPEG is not a bit-for-bit preservation of the HEIC source. There is no fixed quality guarantee that truthfully applies to all HEIC images or every conversion path.

Dimensions are not the same as quality

Pixel dimensions describe the width and height of a decoded picture, not every aspect of its fidelity. For normal iPhone still images successfully processed by this converter, the output JPEG retains the decoded dimensions. A same-size image can still have changed compression characteristics or no longer include information outside the ordinary image pixels.

What this converter does not keep
